Translating executive vision into engineering reality. Read how I led the agile product expansion of a mobile-only startup into a robust web platform that secured corporate sponsorship

The Context (The Friction)

  • The Client: Gymble, a sports and fitness management platform.

  • The Problem: The startup had successfully launched a mobile-only application but needed to expand its product offerings to include a robust web portal for facility owners.

  • The Symptoms: The executive team had a vision for the new platform but lacked the dedicated product management infrastructure to translate that vision into actionable engineering requirements, risking development delays and scope creep.

The Strategy & Execution (The Flow)

Pillar 1: Requirements Gathering & User Story Architecture

  • Led comprehensive requirement-gathering sessions with the executive team to define the end-to-end user journey for the web platform, beginning at the sign-in experience.

  • Translated high-level business goals into over 100 highly specific, actionable user stories for the engineering team.

Pillar 2: Prototyping & Cross-Functional Alignment

  • Developed a rigorous mapping system, wireframing every page of the web platform on a whiteboard and cross-referencing UI elements with an alphanumeric code tied directly to the master user-story spreadsheet.

  • Operated as the central liaison between design and engineering, ensuring every user story was visually accounted for and technically feasible prior to development handoff.

Pillar 3: Strategic Business Advisement

  • Leveraged previous experience in booking system architecture to challenge initial design assumptions.

  • Steered executive discussions toward industry-standard layouts and competitive advantages, helping to refine the platform's overall market strategy.

The Impact (The ROI)

  • Successful Strategic Pivot: The launch of the web platform was so successful that Gymble officially shifted its business model to prioritize the web experience over the original mobile app due to its advanced functionality and superior market value.

  • Corporate Sponsorship: The platform's growth and diversified business model helped secure a corporate sponsorship from Audible to expand operations in New Jersey.

  • Industry Recognition: The strength of the expanded product offering helped Gymble achieve final-round eligibility for the highly competitive TechStars accelerator program.

The Takeaway

Proper competitive analysis prevents a business from reinventing the wheel. By strictly defining the scope of work and translating executive vision into rigid engineering requirements, a startup can rapidly deploy new products without succumbing to scope creep.
